Fragile Eyes

It's a difficult task to choose the first work to share with your peers.  The below poem is one of my favorites, albeit sad.  I wrote it in college after hearing a woman speak in one of my classes about her personal experience with domestic abuse and what can happen when no one steps in to help.

Fragile Eyes - written 11/21/2004

It started so innocently, just one match
A single spark to hit a patch
Of emptiness left unattended and ignored
No amount of water was poured
She simply sat and watched it grow
Past her control and overflow

Waterfalls pouring lies
From those fragile Eyes

Flames rising like war enemies
Burning down her memories
Each minute dies, faster than the last
Destroying the shadows love had cast
Dreams disappear in flames surreal
Mirages engulf all that appeared real

Waterfalls pouring lies
From those fragile Eyes
Sting in the heat
But the devil’s flames cannot be beat

She looks through the smoky mist
At the sting from his fist
Laying calmly near her temple
More pain than a fire is capable
Scarring for the remainder of eternity
All her soul’s innocent purity

They’ve poured their last waterfall of lies
Those fragile Eyes
That burn in the heat
Of the fire she has no power to beat
